How to Run a Fishing Competition with Fisho

If you've ever run a fishing competition on spreadsheets and paper weigh-in slips, you know the pain. Fisho replaces all of that with a proper digital system — free for clubs — that handles everything from setup to results.

Picture the scene: it's comp day, you've got twenty boats on the water, twenty anglers off the rocks, catches coming in at different times, a whiteboard that's barely legible, and someone's trying to read out scores from a spreadsheet on their phone in the sun. There's a better way.

Fisho's Club Competition Manager is a full digital system for running fishing competitions — from setting up the comp to publishing results. It's built around how NZ clubs actually operate: set up a competition, invite your anglers, and Fisho handles the rest.

What the Club Manager Does

The Competition Manager covers the whole lifecycle of a club comp. As the organiser, you set up the competition — species, scoring rules, and dates — and invite your anglers to register. Whether your comp runs for an afternoon or spans several weekends, Fisho tracks it the same way. During the comp, catches come in via the Fisho app and your Weighmaster approves (or declines) each one. The leaderboard updates in real time. When it's done, results are published automatically.

No paper. No spreadsheets. No midnight data entry.

The system is mobile-first, which matters on comp day when you're out on the water or in remote locations. Once an angler has registered, they can use it offline and sync when they're back in range.

Setting Up Your First Competition

Getting started is straightforward:

  1. Register your club at fisho.nz (takes a few minutes)
  2. Create a new competition — name, date range, target species, scoring rules
  3. Invite anglers to register via link or in-app notification
  4. You're ready

The admin side gives you a full view of registered anglers, catch submissions, and the live leaderboard as the comp runs. We've also put together a short video walking through setup, catch submission, and approval.

How It Works on Competition Day

The Weighmaster or designated admin uses the admin panel to manage the day — approving catches, noting any queries, keeping an eye on the board. Anglers use the Fisho app to enter their catches directly from the water, including photo, species, weight, length, and method. Those catches come through to admin for review.

The leaderboard is live and visible to all anglers through the app. They can see where they sit in real time — which tends to create a bit of healthy competition.

What It Costs

Registering your club costs nothing, and running a competition is free up to 50 entrants — which covers the vast majority of club comps outright.

For bigger competitions, a simple fair-use fee applies — no plan, no contract, no sales process:

  • Up to 50 entrants — free, always
  • 51–500 entrants — $249 flat, per competition
  • 500+ entrants — cost-recovery pricing by arrangement

It's a fee per competition, not a club-wide plan — a club with 300 members running a 40-entrant comp pays nothing. The fee only applies to the specific competition that goes over 50 entrants.

Want to give your members Apple and Google Wallet membership cards too? That's a separate optional add-on — $199 per year including GST, unlimited members — unrelated to competition size. See Club Manager for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Competitions with up to 50 entrants are completely free, which covers the vast majority of NZ club comps. For larger competitions (51–500 entrants), there's a flat $249 fee per competition—no ongoing club membership required.

Yes. The Fisho app is mobile-first and works offline. Anglers can log catches from the water without signal, and syncs automatically when back in range. This is essential for remote NZ fishing locations.

Once a Weighmaster approves a catch in the admin panel, the live leaderboard updates instantly for all anglers viewing the app. This creates healthy competition and transparency during the comp day.

Anglers submit photo, species, weight, length, and method of catch. The Weighmaster reviews and approves or declines each submission—eliminating disputes and replacing paper slips entirely.

Club registration takes a few minutes at fisho.nz. Creating your first competition (name, dates, rules, species) takes another 5–10 minutes. You're ready to invite anglers immediately after.

Yes. Once the competition closes, Fisho publishes final results automatically—no manual data entry, spreadsheet exports, or midnight admin work required. Results are available to all registered anglers instantly.

Yes, as an optional add-on. Apple and Google Wallet membership cards cost $199/year (inc. GST) for unlimited club members and are completely separate from competition pricing.

Each competition is priced separately. A club with 300 members running ten 40-entrant comps per year pays nothing—you only pay the $249 fee if a specific competition exceeds 50 entrants.
