Data Sources & Attributions
Fisho combines data from several government agencies, scientific institutions, and open-source projects. We're grateful for the work behind each of these — here's what we use, and where it comes from.
Wind, swell & weather — Open-Meteo
Wind speed and direction, swell height and period, sea state, air temperature, and barometric pressure are provided by Open-Meteo, an open-source weather API. Their forecast data is licensed under CC BY 4.0.
Tide predictions — NIWA
Tide times and heights are sourced from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) Tidal API, covering 15 gauge locations around New Zealand. See our methodology page for the full list of gauges and how the tide charts are built.
Sea surface temperature — NASA JPL & NOAA CoastWatch
Sea surface temperature and thermal break data come from the Multi-scale Ultra-high Resolution (MUR) SST dataset, produced by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and served via NOAA CoastWatch's ERDDAP server. Fisho ingests a fresh daily snapshot at native (~1km) resolution for New Zealand coastal waters.
Fish species & weight data — FishBase & IGFA
Length-to-weight constants used in the Fish Weight Calculator are sourced from FishBase, the global reference database for fish biology, and from International Game Fish Association (IGFA) formulas for billfish species. See the methodology page for the full species table and sources.
Fishing regulations — Fisheries New Zealand
Minimum legal size and daily bag limit data is sourced from Fisheries New Zealand, part of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Always confirm current rules at mpi.govt.nz before fishing.
Maps & location search
Map tiles are © OpenStreetMap contributors, rendered using the open-source Leaflet library. Location search in the "Pick a location" tool uses Nominatim, OpenStreetMap's geocoding service.
Open-source software
Fisho is built on a number of open-source projects, including Bootstrap and Bootstrap Icons for layout and iconography, and Alpine.js for lightweight interactivity such as the date picker. We're grateful to every contributor behind these projects.
